Tips to Build Your Network

Give First

The number one piece of advice is to always give first in any networking situation. Too many times others are looking to take first and they never end up giving anything. Do not go into a networking situation just looking for a job, contact or lead until you can be able to give something first. That something doesn't have to be anything big and can even be something as small as an article about their industry.

Be A Connector

The number one way that you can give first is by connecting people. Even if you do not have a way to connect with someone, always be thinking of others in your network that you could connect them with. Connecting two people will make you look a lot more valuable in both contacts eyes.

Elevator Pitch

Having an elevator pitch is crucial. You need to get as much information to the people you meet as quickly as possible. Everyone should have more than one elevator pitch for the various expertise that they have. View this hub for more information on developing an elevator pitch.

Volunteer

At networking events, do you know where the best place is to meet everyone? It is at the front desk registering everyone. The reason is that events are always looking for volunteers. Also, each time people come to check-in you will know exactly who they are and for which company they work. The benefit is that you once the networking event starts you will know exactly whom you need to speak with at the event.

Share Success Stories

People want to hear about when things work. Make sure you share the success stories you have had in the past around networking. Ask to hear about their own success stories. A real indication of an effecitve networker is one that has an endless supply of success stories.

Follow-Up Quickly

Remember, this is not dating. There is no two day rule here. Follow-up as quickly as possible with the contacts that you meet. The last thing you want to do is let the energy drain from the meeting by waiting months to follow-up with the contact.
